week sixteen Art III...

The most riveting books, movies and play all have one thing in common - a little drama. The use a dramatic lighting in a work of art is also a great way to pull in the viewer. The Art III students will begin a black and white acrylic painting using the technique Chiarosuro. Their subject is a portrait. They will use a photograph that they took for reference. Artists known for this style include Carravagio and Giovanni Baglione.


Week sixteen Art IV...

We are SOOOOO close to finishing our toy paintings. We will spend a few days putting the finishing touches on them. At the end of the week we will start a new colored pencil project - Starting the day off right - with the daily news and a good breakfast.

AP Art students are working on concentration piece # 3. Critique will be Tuesday, December 4th - that is SOON!

Week fifteen...

Art III will spend Monday and Tuesday working on our Holiday Season Inspired paintings.

Art IV will put the finishing touches on their toy paintings.

AP Art will critique concentration # 2.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we will spend time with loved ones, eat too much and man the crowds.

Art III week fourteen...

Art III will begin Christmas themed paintings in the style of Don Tiller. Tiller begins with black gesso, creating a background that makes colors even brighter.

Art III week thirteen...

Art III will CRITIQUE their black and white charcoal drawings on MONDAY. We will have a post it note critique. Afterwards we will go back to our sketchbooks to complete our STRATA/STENCIL project.

ART IV week thirteen...

Still working on our TOY PAINTINGS.

AP Art week thirteen...

After we CRITIQUE on Monday, the students will start CONCENTRATION piece # 2. Each student will continue to work independently on his/her chosen theme.

AP Art week twelve...

AP Art students have switched form the breadth section of their portfolios to their concentrations. Each student is working independently this week on a student selected theme. Our first CRITIQUE will be MONDAY, 11/5/12.

Art IV week twelve...

Art IV has done all the prep work: planning, photographing, lighting, reviewing value, complements, and intensity, toning the canvas, and practicing our color palette. It is now time to paint our toys.

Art III week twelve...

We will spend Monday and Tuesday completing our charcoal drawings. We will CRITIQUE on MONDAY,  NOVEMBER 5th.

We will also work in our sketchbooks this week. Our focus will be on using a STRATA compositional format and making STENCILS.

For extra credit, tell me who designed the Che Guevera stencil.

Art IV week eleven...

Art IV students will complete an exercise in their sketchbook where they must match color swatches using primary plus black and white acrylic paint.

We will look at the artwork of local painter Beth Edwards as inspiration for our next project: an acrylic painting using toys as the subject.

AP Art week eleven...

It is time to begin the concentration section of our portfolios. We will complete some brainstorming exercises the first part of the week and then each student will begin working independently by Wednesday.

Art III week eleven...

This week we will start a black and white charcoal drawing using colored paper. Our subject is white objects: a bowl of eggs, baby shoes or a man's white collared shirt.
Students want to use shape and value to create their drawings.

Art III 'weave' requirements...


Weave Sketchbook Assignment DUE: MONDAY, 10/22

SUBJECT: TO WEAVE
MATERIALS: SKETCHBOOK (2 PAGES NEXT TO EACH OTHER) AND ANY OTHER ART MATERIALS
REQUIREMENTS:
  • ·      USE RULE OF THIRDS
  • ·      LITERALLY WEAVE ANOTHER TYPE OF PAPER INTO THE PAGE
  • ·      DRAW A SIMULATED WOVEN TEXTURE – IN AT LEAST TWO DIFFERENT SECTIONS
  • ·      MAKE A LIST OF THINGS THAT ARE WOVEN
  • ·      WORK THE WORD W-E-A-V-E INTO THE DESIGN
  • ·      INCLUDE THE DEFINITION OF WEAVE

Leather Workshop...

Tandy Leathers will be visiting us this week for an after school workshop. We will create individual cuff bracelets using leather tools provided by Tandy.








Art IV week ten...

Art IV will be working in their sketchbooks this week. They will first create a cover that clearly identifies the book as theirs by using tape transfers and mixed media.


ART III week ten

ART III will work in their sketchbooks the first part of the week. 
      SUBJECT: to weave
      CONCEPT: using the rule of thirds



Sketchbook Covers will be graded Tuesday, October 16th.






There is testing going on this week. Therefore, class schedules are a bit unusual. So, if time permits, we will begin a black and white charcoal drawing on colored paper using white household objects as the subject matter. Students will demonstrate understanding of value and shape/form in the drawings.


AP Art week ten...

AP Art will complete their GRISAILLE paintings this week and we will CRITIQUE on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19th.

We will continue with our GRAISAILLE paintings this week in AP Art.

Art III week nine...

We will spend one last day in class working on our stipple drawing. CRITIQUE IS THURSDAY 10/4/12.

On Tuesday, we will spend several days working in our sketchbooks. 

Art IV week nine...

Art IV will find their inner zombies this week with oilstick or chalk pastel drawings. CRITIQUE on FRIDAY 10/5/12.

AP Art week eight...

AP Art will begin a new Breadth assignment this week. Their goal is to use architecture to demonstrate how light behaves. So their subject is architecture but their subject matter is how light reacts.

Art IV week eight...

Art IV will spend one last day working on their still lifes. CRITIQUE IS THURSDAY, 9/27/12.

Beginning Tuesday, Art IV will work on portraits that show their INNER ZOMBIE. They will create portraits that demonstrate characteristics of a zombie: glazed eyes, sallow skin tones and thinning hair. The artwork will be displayed during AHS's first ever Zombie Prom sponsored by the Theater Department - more details to come.

AP Art week seven...

We critiqued our still lifes on Monday - they really turned out fantastic.

Tuesday was movie day. We watched the film Empire of the Eye: The Magic of Illusion. A great documentary on the history of linear perspective.

Wednesday through Friday the students will create a drawing that exemplifies SHAPE TO FORM. 

Art IV week seven...

Art IV will work to complete their still life drawings with color and compositional formats.

Art IV and AP week six...

Art IV and AP students are continuing to work on their pattern/texture still life drawings.
AP Art will finish the drawing by the end of the week and CRITIQUE ON MONDAY 9/17/12.

Art III week six...

Stippling is a drawing technique that uses clusters of small dots to create the illusion of form and value. Art III students will use this technique over tea stained paper. Each student is working from a photo he/she took.

Art III week five...



After students complete their 'Review Collages', which are due Thursday, 9/6/12, they will make landscapes using NEVER DULL and PAGES FROM MAGAZINES.

AP Art & Art IV week five...


Art IV and AP Art will continue to explore pattern and texture with their still life drawings. They will use India Ink and and color medium of their choice to complete the assignment. One objective of the lesson is to juxtapose a flat picture plane with a suggestion of depth and space.

Here are some artists that did just that...            
Notice how Henri Matisse flattens the picture plane with the pattern on the wall and table but
suggests depth with the view out of the window.

Gustav Klimt pushes the boundaries of abstraction vs. realism when he juxtaposes a realistic figure
against such elaborate patterns. Beautiful!

Art III week four...

Art III students will spend Monday completing their drawings of the blocks of wood and nails. We will CRITIQUE ON THURSDAY, 8/30/12.


Students will finish the week creating collages in their sketchbooks. The collage must include...

Art IV will spend the week completing the drawings of birdcages. We will CRITIQUE ON FRIDAY 8/31/12.

AP Art week four...

AP Art will spend Monday and Tuesday finishing up the birdcages. We will CRITIQUE THURSDAY, 8/30/12.

AP Art will move onto a new Breadth assignment that incorporates line, shape and pattern. They will draw from a still life that is rich in texture and pattern. The students will begin the drawing using India ink and then switch to any color material: watercolor, acrylic, prismacolor, soft pastels to add the pattern.

Art III - week three


Art III students will create drawings that demonstrate NON-LINEAR & LINEAR PERSPECTIVE. They will draw over the marbelized paper we created last week using pen, pencil and white 
prismacolor.

AP Art & Art IV - week three

AP art students will consider the concept of using only LINE to create MASS/VOLUME.

Typically a drawing that shows mass is done with shapes... 


The challenge is to create volume without relying on the shape...

Students will use black and white charcoal on colored paper.

AP Art - week two

AP Art will continue to work on anatomy drawings. CRITIQUE/DUE DATE is Wednesday, 8/15/12.

We will finish out the week reviewing the scoring guidelines set by the collegeboard and practice 'reading' portfolios just like the judges will do.

ART IV-week two

Art IV will continue to work on the anatomy drawings. CRITIQUE/DUE DATE is Friday 8/17/12.

Art III - Week two

Art III will continue reviewing COLOR HARMONIES this week.

The color reviews reference Henri Matisse's cut paper collages and Pablo Picasso's anti-war painting, Guernica.

We will also use the ancient Japanese technique of Suminagashi to create marbelized paper.



We will end the week with a review of LINEAR AND NON-LINEAR METHODS FOR CREATING PERSPECTIVE.
